The Other Half of Dating Advice Guy

Published on January 17, 2015

Hi there, I’m somewhat new to this blog, although you may have come across my name here before, as I’m the other half of Brad’s success story with online dating.

My name is Kate and we’ve been married for nearly 8 years now. While Brad has said some really sweet things about me in his Online Dating Guide and blog posts, I have to say, I consider myself the lucky one! I could go on about how smart/handsome/funny my husband is, but I don’t want to brag. However, in terms of my online dating experience, I am truly lucky.

I decided to give online dating a try after a few awkward matchmaking attempts by some friends. I figured if my friends couldn’t help me to find a good date, I would try to help myself and avoid the awkward post-date conversations that followed with those friends. I didn’t look too far when deciding on which dating service, and went with Match.com since it was the biggest service and pretty easy to create a profile for a free three-day trial.

And as fate would have it, I received an email from Brad during my three-day trial. So my experience with online dating doesn’t go beyond exchanging a few emails, agreeing to a few dates, and then meeting the man of my dreams. I realize we can’t all be that lucky. Brad had to put a lot of effort into his online dating experience. Over the course of a little more than a year, he set up and went on at least 35 first dates and a good bit of them resulted in second dates or more.

Having shared my brief experience in online dating, I don’t want to minimize my familiarity. Brad and I have pretty much been inseparable since June 9, 2005 (our first date) and I’ve witnessed this site grow like wildfire. I’m very proud of my husband and his altruistic goals of helping others to find good relationships. And as the site continues to grow, I’m excited to become a part of the team by blogging about the rewards and challenges of online dating.

I’ve used the words “fate” and “luck” to describe my online dating experience, but personally, I feel blessed. When I created my Match.com account, I was coming out of a divorce after a short-lived failure of a marriage. And just a day or two before my first date with Brad, my company reorganized and I was let go. It was a rough time for me being nearly divorced and unemployed, but I thought that finding a date could be a nice change of pace and give me something positive to think about. I wasn’t expecting to immediately meet the man who would become my husband and later the father to my children!

I guess I’m just sharing these personal details to let you know that no matter what your circumstance, you can have hope in taking that first step in online dating. There are more and more happy couples out there who have had success because of online dating and while it may take some time and a lot of effort, it sure beats focusing on the negatives in life.

So if you’re feeling any hesitancy about online dating, please don’t be shy about asking questions. I’m happy to provide a woman’s perspective and would love to hear from our readers. I know Brad has enjoyed the opportunity to offer personalized advice to readers who have contacted him. And he has been rewarded for his efforts when he hears back from a reader who has found their special someone.
