Shopping for Your Next Date
Published on December 15, 2010
Several months ago I was contacted by the folks who run AdoptAGuy.com describing their site. When I checked the site out I really did think it was a great and fun idea but somehow writing about it kept slipping my mind.
Now that I’m finally getting around to it I imagine many people have already heard of this service. However, for those who haven’t AdoptAGuy is a dating service that mixes shopping with dating in what I would consider to be an extremely female friendly dating site.
Women browse men’s profiles by different categories and then can add guys to their “shopping cart”. This puts the traditional dating model on it’s head where men normally initiate the communication but in a way that seems it would actually encourage women (if not be out-right addictive). This is also nice for guys who are frequently in a position of driving communication with online dating and in the “real” world. This approach also addresses some issues other services have such as men spamming every woman on the site.

While this seems like a great idea I can’t help but feel the opposite of this service would be a horrible idea (if men were shopping for women)! There is a touch of objectifying going on here with the structure for men using the site…but guys generally aren’t bothered by this so it actually works out well.
