Online Dating Scams Still Fooling Many Singles
Published on April 12, 2010
An article at MSNBC lists some of the most common online datings scams that are successful. Online dating is right at the top of that list. Many of use want to believe we’ve found love so badly that we’ll believe anything. I thought this article was great, right from the beginning:
Most people think they’ll never fall for a scam. In fact, that frame of mind is precisely what con artists look for. Those who believe that they know better are often the last to raise their defenses when criminals are nearby. Yes, Virginia, people lose money online. A lot of it. They wire cash to London, they can’t help investigating the one-in-a-million chance they really are related to a dead prince from Africa, and they sometimes even travel to Nigeria to find out. Just in case.
If you’re dating online, I would recommend you read the entire article but at the very least read the first section specifically regarding online dating. I’ve covered some of this in my series on online dating scams but every time I read another article it seems like I learn something new. In this article it was that the scammers would send gifts to women with stolen credit cards to further give the impression of being legitimate. That’s one idea I had never considered!
Also, the article references RomanceScams.org which is a site run by former victims. Remember! The most dangerous thing you can do is assume you don’t need to read this kind of information. Believing that you could never fall for a scam is the first step to doing so.
