Seniors: The Fastest Growing Segment in Online Dating
Published on December 22, 2009
Today the fasting growing group among web daters is the 50-plus crowd. I can attest that in the last year I’ve seen a big spike in dating questions from this group (actually, I can’t remember any contact from this demographic prior to 2009). As this article points out, eHarmony, Match.com and Lavalife have all seen significant growth in the 50-plus crowd in the last few years.
I’m not surprised by this as online dating is opening doors previously not available. In our prime years, the traditional spots to meet singles are no longer welcoming. There’s been little option outside of church, senior centers or senior groups to meet other singles. Even in those cases, many of the members are not single or not looking. For those looking for companionship (which is arguable the primary driving force), these areas are a fairly limited resources.
If you’re a single that fits this demographic and you haven’t tried online dating, I would highly recommend it. If you’re not sure where to start, check out my recent article New to Online Dating: Where Should I Start. If you’re looking for more information, I have a free online dating guide you can also download.
If the statistics are true, there will be plenty of other singles to meet! Even Facebook has had enormous growth lately in in users over 35 (it’s doubled in size for this demographic in 2 months). While 35 and 50 are a few years apart, there is still greater growth occurring in the older generations than the younger ones. While I recommend some sites to try in the article, there are also sites geared specifically for those in their prime such as Silver Singles. Regardless of the service you try, if you’re single and looking for companionship online dating is offer opportunities like never before.
